Reading is hugely important in any student's education. Emergent bilinguals are often overlooked when reading exercises and assignments are assigned to the entire class. The population I work with is an underserved community with the odds stacked against them - many do not own home computers or have access to internet access or digital libraries. Actual, tangible books give the students the responsibility of reading outside of class where they have the time to understand and digest the content or story. Graphic novels such as "Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood" allow students to understand a story in a foreign language through images and by removing the overwhelming task of understanding every word. A key study titled "The Study of Mr. Tanaka" describes a 42-year-old man who worked in the radiology department in a local hospital in Osaka, Japan. After graduation from a vocational college, he had not studied English for nearly 20 years. He attended a class based on story listening and carried out a personal reading program. After reading graded readers for six months, he took the TOEIC exam in January 2009 and scored 475 (255 in listening, 220 in reading). One year later, in January 2010, Mr Tanaka took the TOEIC exam again and scored 655 (330 in listening, 325 in reading). Just as American students dream of college, so do emergent bilinguals - where all-important test scores are needed to be accepted. Offering these students the opportunities to participate in an extensive reading project gives them the opportunity to increase their literacy and reading skills, helps build confidence with extended texts, leads to improvement in test scores and writing, and facilitates the development of prediction skills.
