I work at a school where 70% of the students are on free or reduced lunch. Many of these students do not have a home library. Many of these students can not go to the public library for books. I feel that a strong classroom library is the start to loving reading. I believe that books are the first vacation that children take. Books take us to different places, times, and allow our interests to soar. In order to get kids interested in reading, we need topics that keep up with our ever-changing world. When kids can relate to a topic, they become more interested. Interest builds desire to read, which in turn increases fluency and comprehension. Reading stories makes unmotivated kids excited because they feel like they're getting away with reading less. What they don't realize is that they're getting a world of text features, photos, and exciting topics that they would have tuned out on had they been in a textbook.
