We have recently been offered access to a kiln, and this has inspired me to bring some real ceramics to Acadia. So far this year we have only been able to use air dry clay. During those lessons I saw an amazing increase in focus in my students. They were given the opportunity to problem solve how to make their ideas come to life. They loved the sensory experience, and it was a great chance for them to work on fine motor skills. I want our children to be able to take this passion to a new level. Kiln fired clay will last a lot longer, which helps our children take pride in what they are working on. When they know that their project will last, they take so much more time and care on their work. I plan to introduce clay across most grades to make a variety of projects such as coil projects, pinch pots, jewelry, and more.
