Our students learn about World War II as a remote event in the past, something that happened across the globe, but not here in inland Colorado. Little do most of them know that Japanese internment camps were part of our state. Tall grass is the story of a thirteen year-old girl whose town is chosen as the site of a Japanese internment camp. We need a class set of the novel Tallgrass to connect to our own history. What does it mean to be a real American? Can we be accepting of other cultures...or even be friends with those different from us - or is this dangerous? This book answers questions we grapple with daily in our country from the safe historical perspective of the 1940s.
