SEL is a major concern in schools today. Our district has adopted the PATHS (Promoting Alternative THinking Strategies) curriculum to help address the needs of our students. There are fifty lessons that address emotional health and the skills students need to be productive in the classroom. Children learn best when they are lost in a story. There are a series of books the curriculum suggests to start each unit with, to help students understand the topic. Following the introduction of the unit through stories read aloud, students are taught an SEL skill that they practice throughout the week through role-play and discussion. There is a "PATHS kid" of the week that helps with the lesson of the week and demonstrates the skill taught during that lesson. Students are taught at the beginning of the year how to give a compliment and each PATHS kid is given several compliments from their peers and the teacher to take home and share with family members.
