First grade is an incredibly important year for students' growth as readers! Having strong routines and enticing materials in place supports students' independence and development of a reading identity. We will use the canvas tote bags as book baggies that students can bring back and forth from home to school When children are engaged in reading books they love, everything changes. My students adore Mo Willems's books, and having a full set of the Elephant & Piggie series as well as the Pigeon series will round out our classroom library. We will use the file folders to set up reading mats where students can set out their books for the day, and the pocket chart to reinforce our daily schedule.
