In my high school Geometry classroom compasses will provide my students with a vital tool and allow them to participate in hands-on activities. They provide an experiential aspect of learning that is key for the students to master standards in Geometry. Creating constructions, or drawing shapes, angles or lines accurately, is a fundamental method for teaching the properties of triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons. Compasses also enable students to create and analyze equilateral, isosceles, obtuse, acute, scalene, rhombi, and trapezoids. The students enjoy constructions in Geometry because it is a fun way to learn and it helps them retain the information and skills by performing an action as opposed to simply viewing the information. They get to learn by DOING. In addition to the educational value, it also allows students who cannot afford this equipment to engage in this learning in a new way.
