My students need maps they can see! Teaching social studies for three grade levels requires me to take my students on a journey throughout different parts of the world every day. Currently, we have 2 desk-sized maps I display on one wall of my room- these are way too small! I also use my Active Board to show maps. However, my Active Board is always in use showing other resources, so I constantly have to go back and forth between what I want my students to see. Some students can't always see the small maps I hang on the wall. If I use the Board to display a map, they can't connect the content of what I'm teaching to the location in which it happened because I'm using the Board for videos or other resources for the lesson. We often complete activities that require them to use a map, and they simply can't see the ones they need to use. In addition, I have many students who are given preferred seating due to vision needs, so larger maps are a major need for them. If I were to have a large set of pull-down maps in my room, students from any part of the room could view the maps clearly. With this set, they can also view different types of maps, such as physical and political. I can also use these consistently, so students can have more fluid instruction during lessons, and consistent references during long term units.
