“Can we please work together on the floor?” This is probably the request I hear most often in my classroom. When it comes to art, my students are eager to work collaboratively. Providing a safe, warm, comfortable space for them to spread out materials such as fabric, fibers and other sculptural materials will allow students to express their ideas with each other in a naturally inclusive environment. When students work collaboratively they learn to empathize with and support each other and their artistic visions. Student artists work together as equals and pool their ideas. Each child is like a little culture all their own. By experiencing the creative flow on their own, a child comes to understand themself and their own inner experience. By working with others, the student gains similar insight into their friends and classmates.
