Reading is a basic skills that everyone needs no matter what their walk of life holds. For struggling readers to improve their reading comprehension, they need access to high interest books.
Because my students are struggling readers, they claim that they hate reading; however, with high interest books with characters that the students can see themselves in, they may have a greater desire to read and become lifelong readers. By providing the students with books that they can fall in love with, they will read more and raise their Lexile reading scores in order to help them achieve their goals in the classroom.
Many of my students do not feel that they see their lives reflected in the literature in the classroom and do not want to read the books. This project will allow me to put books in the hands of my students that they can relate to. The more my students read, the better readers they will become and the higher their vocabularies will grow. Supplying books to my students that they won't be able to put down will give them vital skills in their lives. Reading is a crucial skill for success in life and building their Lexiles is a necessity.
