I teach vocational and food prep classes to my special needs students. Some of these classes include a cookie decorating class where students learn skills to work in a bakery setting or possibly own their own small business after leaving school. I also teach a food prep class where students make meals twice a week and sell them to staff and students around the building as a small business. Students best learn these skills by cooking, creating, and learning in a hands-on environment. In these small business classes, students are responsible for the planning (of the menu), the shopping, the prepping, packaging, and delivery of the goods. They also work with money to shop, collect from customers, and make change. The hope is that by the end of the semester or school year, students have learned many prepping/cooking/selling skills.
