I'm excited to build a small library of sets of books my students can choose from. My goal is to obtain a few sets of four to five books, all involving aspects of a culture that is new to our students. "Salt to the Sea" and "A Long Way Gone" would be amazing additions to my classroom. I'd like to begin book groups, where students read at the same pace as their group members, and hold discussions based on what they've read. Most students in our school district do not venture out of the county, and have little experience with cultures other than our own. Having these literary sources at our disposal can offer an education that can change how they see the world, and how they participate in society.
