Books can act as a mirror into our own lives. They can also be a window into lives that are unfamiliar to our own experiences. I want to give students access to lives that are different than their own. I also want to be able for them to see themselves in literature. Books with diverse characters have the unique ability to give students experiences to practice empathy and tolerance towards the unknown. These books will give my students opportunities to see the world through multiple points of view. One day they can experience a marketplace in Pakistan, and the next day they could be on the streets of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
