A class set of Ruta Sepetys' book, "Salt to the Sea" will allow me not only to expose students to a part of history often ignored, the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff, but also provide them with diverse perspectives through the eyes of four dramatically different, yet similar, teenagers living during that time. This novel is a great way to teach history, point of view, and provides a great example of an unreliable narrator which is essential in teaching character development. I have quite a list of engaging activities planned for this novel, including a research unit using events in this time in history.
