Suddenly the nervousness sets in... Trying to catch your breath, you want to get out. You want to run and scream but no words come out. You don't want anyone to see you but it feels like all eyes are upon you which makes the breathing even more impossible. You're immobilized and it feels like it will never get better...
Panic Attacks, Anxiety, ADHD, Autism, Identity, Learning Disabilities- many of our students struggle with different challenges that make learning so much more difficult. With the support of generous donors, we could provide the tools that support our students through difficult moments within the school day where they spend so much of their young lives. We can ensure they will have ample time and opportunity to practice effective organizational and coping strategies such as the use of stress balls, fidgets, headphones (noise cancelling for non-instructional time) and journals in conjunction with staff support and a safe place. Our students aim to fully embody who they are and prepare for their transitions into post- secondary education and employment.
These tools allow our students to utilize their newfound strategies within the classroom with minimal (if any) disruption to their own learning and the learning of others. Students will also have the opportunity to go to the Social Work, Counseling or Parent Liaison's offices during especially difficult moments with additional tool availability including kinetic sand and staff support to introduce and practice utilization of a multitude of coping strategies and tools.
When students are able to access the tools and support they need at school, attendance and academic performance both improve! At AAW, we strive to support our students in becoming the most successful, hard-working, well-balanced young adults they can be to support them in meeting their goals.
