Understanding where their food comes from is something that baffles many students. My hope is to help change that by using an indoor greenhouse. This set-up will allow students the opportunity to plant and grow produce by testing variables through scientific inquiry. Using what they have grown, along with the art supplies in this project, students will be able to model their understandings of plant growth and genetics through tangible representations. Hands-on projects help students to take responsibility for their own learning while building their confidence. These supplies will help students to design their own scientific inquiry projects and model their results in varied ways. Leaving the exploration up to the students, while creating a controlled environment in the classroom, pushes students to explore the science behind plant growth more deeply. The more that they question the process, the more easily they seem to retain the information. In a windowless classroom, we have had a hard time growing plants in past years. The LED lighting in this project will help us save energy, while safely growing our plants in our indoor greenhouse. The greenhouse is large enough to hold all 75 of the students' projects in a controlled area. Once we have completed our scientific research, the peat pots will allow students to take their projects home and plant them!
