I am a History teacher who wants to support the Literacy Standards. However, last year, many of my students hated reading novels. When I introduced the class to a graphic novel in my classroom, my students absolutely loved it and ran into class ready to read the next section. It hooked a majority of my students who had no interest in reading and supported the needs of ESL and special education students. They were pleading with me to present another graphic novel to them, but it was our only one. It will mean the world to my students to be able to continue learning History through graphic novels and technology.
How can my students survive college with no exposure to technology and a lack of interest toward reading?
We had no technology in our classroom last year. My students need to learn the protocol of an online college class. Tablets will give my students the opportunity to develop the life skill required of researching online. My students need to learn how to be effective researchers using the internet. With these tablets they will have a library at their fingertips instead of just a mere textbook. My students also need headphones, as many of our sources will be interviews and vlogs and students need to be able to listen and re-listen.
