I believe this set of novels will benefit my class. The main character is Naomi, who is eleven years old, which is the age of my students. Naomi and her brother live a peaceful, secure life in a trailer with their grandmother until their alcoholic mother who has been in and out of rehabs and absent from their lives for seven years reappears. Naomi wants to believe that her mother has changed and is now the mother she has always longed for. Unfortunately, this is not the case, and Naomi sets out on a fascinating journey to Mexico to find her father because of the turmoil her mother has created. She does find her father and comes to an understanding of her cultural roots. "Reading is dreaming with open eyes." With this book, children can dream and identify in many ways with Naomi.
