From exploring structures in our neighborhood and school to designing and building structures with classroom materials, students in my class have been delving into open-ended science focused explorations. They engage one another as they plan and execute their designs, while assessing and documenting their learning. They pretend and explore their imaginations where the ideas for structures are unlimited. Funding this project will take our building and structural explorations to another level. Right now my materials are worn out, broken, or missing, props are very limited, as are books. Our limited supplies right now means that only a few students a day can engage in building during math and science time. With a few more basic building materials more hands can work together. With the props their structures become more real to them as they spark their imaginations through reading and building. The materials I need fall into three basic categories: construction materials, props and books. The construction materials will allow students to build a variety of structures such as farms, airports, houses, and skyscrapers; the props will allow them to set a purpose and engage in imaginary play while they do it; books will spark their imaginations and infuse culture. The construction materials I would like to purchase are a variety of wooden blocks that include large unit blocks, large hollow blocks, as well as planks. The props I would like to purchase include vehicles, animals, and natural materials so that they can really bring their structures to life. I would like to purchase non-fiction books about structures and homes around the world, as well as construction in every day life.
