My students can read, but many feel that reading is outdated and useless. In a world of skimming one social media post to another, they have lost the desire and passion for reading. It is a task that will give them a grade rather than an experience from which they can learn and grow. These books will allow me to build a classroom library that can be used to develop passionate readers who display both comprehension and stamina. My project is to create a classroom library full of books, both modern and classic literature, that can be used to promote sustained silent reading both in and out of class. With these books, students will be able to choose from a variety of titles that meet their interest and Lexile reading level. Based on preliminary assessments at the beginning of each semester, students will create a personalized reading list and set a goal for a number of books to read and discuss. While my school has a classroom library, book numbers are limited, and the book variety does not often appeal to reluctant or struggling readings. These books will develop readers; they will create passion, increase comprehension, and inspire students to appreciate and share literature.
