In second grade, the emphasis shifts from learning to read to reading to learn. I emphasize to my students every day that it is important to understand what they are reading. We are working on finding evidence in the text and using the CLOSE reading strategy to help them become better readers. In order for this strategy to be effective, we need consumable reading materials. Students need hands-on practice using the different colored highlighters. Scholastic News would be a wonderful resource because they are engaging and a different form of reading for students. This would also be something they could take home with them when we finish with each one to bring more texts into their homes. Many of them do not have books at home and look forward to going to the library each week just so that they have something to read.
