My students are playful, joyful, and most of all, they love to read. They spend the majority of their free time browsing our book bins to find a new and exciting book to flip through. During this year, my students have read numerous books on a variety of topics, but there is something very important missing in our library. As students of color, my students rarely have access to books that involve main characters who look like and relate to them. By ordering new and exciting texts that are culturally relevant, my students will be opened to a world of possibilities. Each morning my students sing a song that include the lyrics "reading is knowledge, knowledge is power, power is freedom and I want it!" I want my students to actually feel that in their classroom and to confirm how diverse and exciting reading can be.
