I started a high school Inventors Club seeking students with, or willing to develop, an “it’s OK to fail over and over to achieve success” attitude. I have had, and will continue to invite, inspirational guest speakers, such as a Netflix cofounder; a former NASA engineer; a Brunton engineer; a Century Link Technologies employee, a local civil engineer. Kicking off the club with a project collaborating with a local civil engineer and his son. They are in the process of building a hexacopter drone for dad's civil engineering/surveying business, and would like some students to partake in its assembly under the continued direction of his son. Continuing the club with invention ideas (from students, family members, community members or organizations, staff members, etc.) → learning the patent process → computer 3-D design → prototype development → patent application. And eventually maybe even find a company or individual to purchase an invention idea, or assist with a mass production of the invention. I also envision our high school resources/departments/staff being involved to varying degrees, including but not limited to: English department assisting with writing up required descriptions of inventions, business department for marketing and business plans, 3-D computer design, possible 3-D printing of prototypes, welding shop, wood shop, art department in other ways, physics and mathematics, etc.
