My students participate in Socratic seminars (fishbowl discussions) on a regular basis. It allows them an opportunity to discuss their ideas and listen to other perspectives. They practice strong habits of discussion and learn from one another rather than depending on the teacher to do the heavy lifting. This activity is intentionally student led and gives them the sense of independence they are yearning for as teens. I want my students to enter my classroom feeling safe and successful, to be the champions I truly believe they are! I impress upon my students that in order to be somebody, they must act like somebody, and in order to act like somebody, they must believe they are somebody! When introducing these seminars to my students, I emphasize the idea that they must take on the mentality of an attorney walking into court, or a business owner walking into their meeting. I want them to be empowered when beginning their discussions. In life, we stress that we must dress the part of the role we want, and essentially that is what I am asking them to do. These padfolio clipboards will not only allow my students to feel sophisticated, but will also help students to organize themselves prior to and during the Socratic seminars. It will provide them a space to jot down their thoughts, ideas, and disagreements to add to or further their conversations.
