My school district is transitioning to a "SHARED READING" based curriculum. Shared Reading is an interactive reading experience that enables students to join in or share in the reading of a big book or large text while guided by the teacher. Being able to use Big Books for shared reading will enable my students to live the stories and become better readers. Students will be able to observe an expert reader while viewing the actual text. Students will also share in the reading process and learn to read with fluency and expression. As young readers, it is crucial that my students are able to view the printed text. Being able to view the large print will enable students to improve their comprehension, fluency, vocabulary and their ability to decode words. Finally, using Big Books keeps students actively involved in the learning process.
