Games such as Challenge 24, SET game, an Chess will be use in my classroom as learning tools to engage and motivate students, while strengthening students' capacity for problem solving and critical thinking. These games will be taught and utilized as part of small group differentiated math lessons, remediation and enrichment opportunities, whole group math lessons, as well as students' free time. For example, students will work in small groups playing Challenge 24 as a meaningful activity during math centers, or when their math assignments are complete. This insures students are using quality materials, without necessarily completing a worksheet. Additionally, having a class set will allow me to orchestrate a tournament toward the end of the school year! These games not only build reasoning and mathematical thinking, but they also build patience and perseverance which are traits many students are lacking. In the 21st century, students need skills such as problem solving, strategic planning and critical and creative thinking. Building these abilities, and deepening students' thinking will allow them to have the skill sets needed in the work force as they grow older and contribute to a society where science, mathematics and technology are at the forefront. By using these games to engage and motivate my students, I will bring some of the fun and peer collaboration back into the classroom, while building valuable skills. Help me build critical thinkers through play!
