As an ENL teacher, I teach students with different language proficiency levels ranging from grades K-5. Unlike the general education classes, “English as a New Language” classes do not have a curriculum or workbooks geared to working and/or practice their skills. As a result, we need to constantly print materials. Since many of them are first born Americans, and they don't know English ,they need a lot of visual support. These materials include scaffolding materials and other hands on activities to help the children grasp the topics they are learning. I have a working printer in my classroom, however, we go through ink cartridges fairly quickly. Recently, I have been using my own money to purchase ink cartridges. It's getting very costly, but I want my students to be able to print what they need (such as articles for research papers, pictures and word documents for projects, etc.) My students also need to have the opportunity to read books of different genres, especially academic bilingual books. Unfortunately, our school doesn't have a school library. It is important for students to be engaged and interactive with physical books and allotted the freedom to choose what books they want to explore. These books and printed materials will go to support 102 English language learners.
