Students need constant visual stimulation to keep up with today's modern toys such a iPads, smart phones, and the latest gaming systems. My vision for an engaging shop and cabinet instructional area is one that would rival the show room floor of any Fortune 500 company. It should be brightly lit with emphasis on every dark corner to bring out quality in every product that the students dare to build. Sadly, our 60's era institution is lacking in the most fundamental essential for craft work, and that is sufficient lighting to see what all is happening in the area. The fluorescent light system currently in place has actually been discontinued for years as modern advancements have replaced aged systems. The "hard to find" fluorescent bulbs are in need of constant replacement, which usually involves the moving of equipment to set up scaffolding to reach them. Fixtures with faulty ballasts are irreparable due to the fact that they are no longer manufactured. The LED lighting system that I am requesting through DonorsChoose would be a tremendous improvement to our facility as well as bringing a modern, 21st Century appeal to the work area as the dated "yellow" light cast by the current working lights, is replaced by the "brilliant white" of the LED's. A continuous concern in a high school shop setting is that of safety, and our dimly lit area fosters numerous safety concerns that would likely not meet some of the OSHA requirements that we are trying to educate our students about. Dimly lit areas make tasks such as sanding, painting, and finishing difficult, not to mention the use of power equipment. I need your help to update our facility and give my students a work area as bright as they are!
