A teacher once told me, "When the bum is numb, the brain is dumb," and I see this proven to be true time and time again in my classroom. My kids are a very diverse group of learners with one striking thing in common: they all have an impossibly difficult time holding still and paying attention all day long. With all of the standards and objectives being thrown at them day after day, no matter how many songs we sing or brain breaks we take, the majority of their day is spent sitting in a desk being told to stay still and absorb it all. I want to revolutionize those desks into seating structures that allow children to fidget in a controlled, hidden manner, engaging their brains significantly more throughout our daily learning without distracting those around them. That is why I am applying for these fidget cubes and bouncy bands. The bouncy bands, elastic bands that attach to the legs of the desk, enable students to gently bounce their feet during instruction, increasing blood flow throughout the body and helping their brains stay alert and focused. The fidget cubes allow my more energetic students, who love to tap their pens or build things in their hands during a lesson, a quiet but satisfying way to release some of that energy which helps them remain attentive. In order to meet the rigor of today's educational expectations, they need constant oxygen and glucose to their brain to maintain alert. It may seem like a small change, but for my students it could mean the difference between failure and success.
