I started Math Club last year as an after school program for kids to attend. The initial goal was to fill the learning gaps that some students possessed. As the year went on, the group grew and I began using fun programs like DigitWhiz, sheppardsoftware.com, Kahoot, and other websites to start a club wide competition. The kids really enjoyed this and many began developing the skills that they had lacked before starting Math Club. Others developed advanced skills that helped them thrive in their math classes. I had about 5 student go from an F to a B! Even though my goal was to help students who were struggling in math, I noticed that students who excelled in math were starting to join. The club became very popular last year with about 20 students at one point. Since students do not have to attend every week, it allows them to attend to other after school activities if needed. Many of my students who had multiple activities the day of Math Club, would still beg me to write them notes in order to attend Math Club. During our sessions, we begin by focusing on mental math, multiplication, division, fractions and decimals. Many students do not grasp some of these concepts during class. Websites like Digitwhiz and sheppardsoftware.com have allowed me to put a fun twist on learning about these subject areas. So instead of students dreading multiplication, we play a timed bingo game where I also join. The incentive is to beat the teacher. They love math club and I hope you can help support our club by allowing us to purchase a set of chrome books for the Math club.
