Kindergarten students are filled with wonder. They see a living creature and instantly want to touch it and observe it. By supplying them with caterpillars, earthworms, and owl pellets, you will be helping them discover the difference between living and nonliving things and what living things need to grow and change. The butterflies come to us as caterpillars and the students get to observe how the caterpillars eat and shed their skins, form a chrysalis, and turn into a butterfly over the course of a few weeks when they are finally released. Each change offers opportunity for the students to practice science skills: observation, collection of data, and record keeping preparing them for future science courses. Witnessing the emergence of a butterfly that they helped nurture will, not only be memorable, but also will help them appreciate the world around them.
