My students are English Language Learners who struggle to make connections between the academic language they learn in the classroom and the world they encounter on a daily basis outside of the classroom. The New York Times' Upfront magazine from Scholastic is designed for students in grades 6-12. It includes current events that are relevant and interesting for teens, as well as material for studying vocabulary and practicing their comprehension skills. High-interest reading material that is accompanied by visual representations such as pictures, graphs, and charts, is important for these young English Language Learners, because it maintains their motivation to use English reading and writing skills.
