Early literacy skills and number sense are essential skills that every first grade student needs to be successful throughout their education. These skills can be abstract but through the use of hands on materials such as magnetic letters and ten frames learning becomes hands on. Your generous donation will help my class receive magnetic letters and ten frames to help build foundational skills in reading and improve their ability to build numbers by using concrete objects in a visual and kinesthetic way. The Rhode Island University suggests that ten frames are a simple tool that allows children to "see" numbers and understand that numbers are composed of tens and ones which is a prerequisite for working with larger numbers. Arranging counters in different ways on the ten frame prompts students to form mental images of the numbers represented. According to the California Kindergarten Association, magnetic letters are an engaging, kinesthetic way for students to build language, practice creating the word of the day, build sight words, put words in ABC order, build sentences and write theme words based on content areas. In addition to the magnetic letters and ten frames, the phones are especially helpful for second language learners and students with auditory and visual processing constraints. The phones allow students to hear themselves when reading and helps with auditory processing and language. The magnetic whiteboards provide a surface for students to manipulate their magnetic letters on. The whiteboard clipboards have many uses and are versatile in that they allow students to work in different areas of the classroom, save paper, can be used in whole or small groups, and great for checking for understanding. The phonics stamps will be used as an independent learning center and the comprehension cubes will be used during small groups to build comprehension.
