My students are enrolled in a reading intervention program. I mainly service 4th and 5th graders that are reading at a first second grade level. Several of my fifth graders are embarrassed of their inability to read and fear moving on to sixth grade. Reading has been challenging their entire life, and for many they dread picking up a book.
Recently I discovered a website that has thousands of books online and is completely free for teachers. The website, getepic, allows students to chose books at their reading/interest level and can turn the pages electronically and also listen to the story. The ability to chose books online minimizes some of the embarrassment of going to the library as a fifth grader and having to pick a 1 or 2 grade book, or even worse, choosing a 5th grade book, but not be able to read it. The website is compatible with iPads and is a great tool that can be utilized in my reading station.
My students rotate to different stations in small groups to work on different skills. Having the iPads at their reading station would allow more students to access the online books and help ignite a passion for learning. The online website also has books on audio that the students could listen to on the iPad, enhancing their comprehension of the story. Becoming more familiar with technology and using the iPad to read books online will also help prepare them for their state testing that is all done online.
