In my classroom, I try to use as much natural light as possible. Living in Wyoming, this can be somewhat difficult as the sun doesn't shine often in the winter or spring months, making the lighting in the classroom darker and often unmanageable for daily work. Research has shown that fluorescent lighting causes body stress, mental stress, anxiety, and can be a direct link to the cause of migraines. Often times the lights will also flicker and/or make a buzzing noise which adds to the distraction. Having a calming environment for learning has been proven to increase student engagement. Having soft lighting paired with natural lighting in my classroom will help my students achieve their learning goals without impeding on their health. My students insist on having the florescent lights off during all the work they do daily, even during the days that don't provide a lot of natural lighting. The are 24 florescent lights in the classroom, and 2 small windows. Those 2 windows do not provide enough light in order to keep all the florescent lights turned off. We use 1 outlet of the florescent lights (6 lights) to provide us with some lighting during the day. However, my students are still being affected by their usage. They have come together as a whole and asked if I could try to provide them with lamps around the room. They feel that the soft lighting from the lamps could help provide them with enough light to get their daily work done but also keep the calm and steady environment.
