I teach 3rd grade at a school in L.A. county, where most students qualify for free and reduced priced lunch. My school has K-8 students, and we follow the 7 Habits philosophy, which teaches the students to become leaders by adopting habits including: be proactive; begin with the end in mind; think win-win; and seek to understand, then be understood. We aim to teach academics, but also to help develop each student's character. Each morning along with the flag salute, all students recite a 7 Habits pledge. Whenever we have visitors on campus, each classroom has students that meet and greet visitors at the door, and give visitors a brief explanation of what we are working on. My students are learning that I will do all I can to help them learn, but at the end of the day, they should have worked as hard as I have. They are learning that they are responsible for progressing beyond what they learned in the previous grade and must retain that information. Learning, then forgetting, is not an option.
