"The goal of classroom design is to enrich academic, psychological, and sociological growth. The design of such spaces should be intentionally serendipitous and avoid prescriptive and restrictive behaviors, for both teachers and students." (Rethinking the Classroom: Herman Miller 2017) Learning environments should be designed in a way that should increase engagement, foster active learning and teacher and support our learning goals. A study by the National Training Laboratories found that the more active the teaching and learning methods, the higher the retention rates. Brain research also confirms that physical activity – moving, stretching, and walking – can actually enhance the learning process. Eric Jensen (2000), in his article Moving with the Brain in Mind, protests against the sedentary classroom style and suggests a better way to spend the long days in our classrooms, not only for students, but for teachers. Teachers need to engage students in a greater variety of postures, including walking, lying down, moving, leaning against a wall or desk, perching, or even squatting. The brain learns best and retains most when the organism is actively involved in physical activity. "Educators, researchers, and students are discovering the benefits and advantages of cooperative, active, and engaged learning. Classroom spaces that support such a shift in teaching and learning have lagged behind. A significant opportunity exists for maximizing learning opportunities and creating meaningful experiences by rethinking the classroom experience. Getting and keeping students engaged is perhaps the most important step in creating a successful learning outcome." (Rethinking the Classroom: Herman Miller 2017) My goal is to transform the classroom from the traditional seated classroom to a more engaged, flexible seating classroom.
