These Breakout boxes will be utilized for all grade levels and subject areas. Each small box will contain some sort of congratulatory message so students will know their hard work has paid off! On the outside of each box, there will be a hasp containing five different locks. The five different locks will offer students five different opportunities to become critical thinkers and better problem solvers! Each lock is associated with a task that requires the small group to work together. Cooperation and listening are just two of the soft skills taught through Breakout boxes. Specific examples of how we would use these boxes follow: Allied Health: We would give the students a health emergency scenario and ask them to put on the correct protective equipment and be checked off by the teacher. Once they complete this task, we would hand them their Breakout box. One of their first task would be to identify, "At what BPM would a patient be classified as tachycardic?" When the group comes to the answer, 101, they would use this solution to open the 3 digit lock. Another clue might be a QR code that leads them to a document that allows them to search for answers about the heart. The group discovers that the heart has 4 chambers, 3 different kinds of vessels, pumps 2 thousand gallons of blood per day, and has 2 pumps side by side. With this information, the group would be able to solve the four digit lock with 4322. With the blacklight flashlight and the invisible ink, I could create cryptic poems or clues to lead students to their next task or to a key that would open the key lock. With the red overlay paper, I would make clues on the scrambled background from the Internet.
