Have you heard of flexible seating? If not, think about your local Starbucks or any other favorite place in which you can concentrate and work. We, as adults, have a lot of choices. We can choose our seats and change our seating place anytime we wish. If you get tired of sitting on the couch, you can move to a chair or a stool. We can make decisions with whom we are sitting. Young students, just like adults, need comfortable options and choices to learn the best. In an effort to make a learning space more student-centered and similar to our favorite coffee shops and book stores I would like to transition my traditional classroom into a flexible seating classroom where students have a seating choice every day and can change their seats anytime they wish. Based on research and best practices for kids, flexible seating will increase motivation, engagement and improve the students' focus. Flexible seating will also improve core strength and the overall posture of my students. Each child has different preferences and each child needs to have an option to be the most comfortable during his/her learning. I can make this happen by providing our classroom with different kinds and sizes of seats, like the requested wobble chairs and balance balls. The students will then choose where they sit, who they sit with, and what materials they use to complete their work, making for a more student friendly and engaging learning environment.
