The idea of Fit for Life is an after-school program where students will have the resources to explore various methods and realms of fitness that they may not have otherwise. Between the power tower and the weight bench, students will have the chance to be introduced to basics of strength training, as well as safety tips and proper exercise techniques. This will allow students to take their previous knowledge of the fitnessgram and components of fitness and expand upon the basics. The thought behind Fit for Life is for Students to take the knowledge they gain and develop healthy habits for the course of their lifetime. With childhood obesity being an epidemic in the United States, I feel strongly that students need to be better equipped to take care of themselves. The basic fundamentals of strength and conditioning that Fit for Life provides will allow them to have the ability and hopefully the confidence to apply these principals to their own lives. Specifically, the power tower is going to be used for a core exercise circuit that students participate in. Rather than doing an old school military style core workout, we have stations where students travel in small groups, staying and doing certain exercises for a brief allotment before moving to the next. The power tower can be used for multiple exercises including dips and pull-ups as well as leg raises. These are exercises that build on what students have learned about the importance of a strong core. The weight bench and bar are to introduce students to the concepts of weight training. Regardless of whether they have eyes on Interscholastic athletics in High School or simply lifetime fitness, students have expressed an interest in learning about weight lifting and becoming more physically literate individuals.
