We have very minimal access to reading materials and many of the materials we have are at or below my students' reading level. I want to expose them to more challenges texts with a message. I am asking for a class set of the book, Number the Stars. I am trying integrate cross-curriculum texts while challenging them to expand their vocabulary and genre preference. In my school, I started a Holocaust Awareness Month in March and I applied for and was awarded a scholarship to the Holocaust Museum of Illinois. I want to preface that trip with background knowledge and a new sense of passion for the topic. It is my goal to make these students excited about reading and provide them with materials to do so.
