I teach high school seniors at an alternative high school in Utah. The students that come to me do not read at grade level and have not had a lot of success in traditional classrooms. I have amazing students who are often misjudged. I have found that they relate to nonfiction much better than traditional literature found in most high school English classes. Every student I have is here because they want to graduate and make changes in their lives. Many of my students are first generation Americans who will be the first member in their family to graduate high school and potentially go on to college. They are the future and when they read about real success, they believe in their own possible success. Every time I see one of my students become excited about a story, because they have found a text that inspires them, I try harder as a teacher to provide the materials to keep them inspired and learning. A love for learning and reading is one of my primary goals as a teacher.
