Brain research also confirms that physical activity – moving, stretching, and walking – can actually enhance the learning process. Eric Jensen (2000), in his article Moving with the Brain in Mind, protests against the sedentary classroom style and suggests a better way to spend the long days in our classrooms, not only for students, but for teachers. Teachers need to engage students in a greater variety of postures, including walking, lying down, moving, learning against a wall or desk, perching, or even squatting. The brain learns best and retains most when the organism is actively involved in physical activity. Our classroom has recently joined the flexible seating club, and we love it! We have slowly begun to add seating options to the classroom, allowing students the flexibility to choose seats and move throughout the day. Not only are we enjoying this new philosophy, we are showing growth in our focus, discussion, and engagement in lessons. It is having a positive impact on our learning and classroom climate. We are so excited with the progress we're making, we would like to add more seating options. Our next goal is to add wobble stools as a way for students to "wiggle" and move while learning, to increase our learning.
