The students in my classroom struggle tremendously with oral reading fluency. This is the ability to effortlessly translate letters to sounds and sounds to words. Part of why my students struggle with reading fluency is because English is a second language to many of them, another major part of why my students struggle with reading fluency is because they do not have anybody that they live with at home to read with them or read to them. Many studies have shown that students who are able to listen to fluent reading being modeled for them (with accuracy, rate and prosody) are more likely to be fluent readers. My students would greatly benefit from the daily use of iPods in order to hear recorded stories that model fluent reading with expression, correct rate and prosody. I plan on recording my voice reading second grade level stories and downloading it onto the iPods in order for students to listen to during their reading centers. The students will have a copy of the recorded book in front of them and they will follow along in their copy of the book. My students will also greatly benefit from the daily use of tablets in order to play reading/phonics games that let's them practice vital reading and phonics skills in a fun and engaging way. Many of my students do not have any source of technology at home or and access to the internet, so being able to play reading and phonics games on tablets in our classroom would be very rewarding for them.
