My project brings a variety of games into our 8th grade LA/SS classroom: Codenames, Mind, Chronology, Hungry Hippos, etc. Some teach history, while others teach teamwork and communication. All will be used to build community in the classroom and to create learning experiences where students complete challenges by illustrating their learning. When class is engaging and fun, we can all learn. Gamification keeps students' interest by varying the activities and building on a high interest storyline. Challenges and battles invite students to learn as a team, supporting each other, teaching each other, and succeeding together. Yes, the games will, at times, be played as intended. But at other times, we will morph these games to fit our storyline and our curriculum. Codenames will be changed to teach about the Constitution. Connect Four will focus on revision and writing skills. Students will create their own version of Chronology focused on events American History. They are games, but they are also a portal to learning so much more. This is my third year of gamification. Each year has seen improvements in engagement, learning, and grit. This is the next step. It expands our activities and provides students with specific, focused activities that will build community and teach the skills of teamwork. This is the missing link - it's just what we need to move forward.
