These specific pieces of literature will cultivate empathy and compassion in my students. They allow them to see themselves in these texts, swaying my reluctant, struggling readers to want to continue flipping the pages. Furthermore, these books are important because they will empower my students. My students are acutely aware of the way their culture is portrayed by our president and in the media- "rapists, criminals, drug dealers." In the face of hatred and bigotry, they are resilient and angry. My students and their families live in fear every day. They also internalize their struggles, feeling shame about their poverty and ethnicity. These books will let them know that they are not alone. Their shame will diminish as they learn that the problem is society's ills rather than who they are. These novels will inspire them to find and develop their voices in their own writing. Paired with read-alouds, class discussions, and poetry, these books can be powerful tools my students can use to fight back against injustices as well as motivate them to continue to work hard in order to make a difference.
