One way I get my students into books is to have a listening center during our small group time. Students who aren't on grade level in reading benefit the most from this center because they are exposed to higher level text without the demand of reading it on their own before they are ready. While I do a lot of read-alouds, I can't do it enough and make it meaningful for all students equally; there's just not enough time in the day! This is where the listening center helps in differentiating their abilities and getting them the exposure they also need. I have a listening center currently, however, it consists of a very old cd/cassette player and an old set of mis-matched headsets from the library; one of which recently played it's last book and broke apart. This listening center and books on cd would provide my students with a whole new experience when listening to second grade books. They would have quality headphones that can be cleaned and used on a daily basis without worrying about getting the ''broken ones''. They would also have access to second grade books to help in their understanding of reading and processing literature through listening. This grant would help us reach that consistent component of learning we are looking for.
