The days of sitting in quiet rows has come and gone in today's classroom. In order to develop critical thinking, collaboration and problem solving skills, we have to do much more than just present them with the information. It is a student's job to soak up every nugget of information I give them and my job is to create a safe, comfortable and engaging learning environment where they can learn. The materials I am asking for will help me do just that. I am asking for a Great Source Every Day Counts Kit for Grade 2, six Gaiam Kids Balance Balls, six Wobble Cushions, two Big Joe Milano Chairs, a set of Carry Me Cushions, three Squigglets, a Fidget Toy and a Liquid Motion Bubbler. Some of my student's brains turn off the minute they sit in a traditional chair. These children do much better when presented with a variety of choices when it is time to learn. Flexible seating is a term that is growing in popularity and is popping up in more and more classrooms. The idea is to set your classroom up with a variety of seating options so that students can pick the best learning/thinking spot for themselves. Not only does this give them a sense of ownership in their day but it allows them find the best fit for their learning styles. Some kids have lots of energy. The wiggle seats and wobble balls give them an outlet that not only doesn't get them in trouble but helps them focus and learn. Others like to stand and work or sit/lay on the floor. Flexible seating meets these needs, fosters collaboration for those who need it and independent thinking space for those who prefer to work alone. I am a teacher who follows best practices in the classroom! There is so much research backing this concept that I feel it is only a matter of time before we see it across the board as the norm. Given the choice, would you pick a traditional classroom or maybe this?
