Within the last decade the use of technology as an educational tool has increased dramatically. As part of our district's Strategic Plan, we are working hard to close the achievement gap within our schools. Two of our district goals state that our students will be reading on grade level by third grade and that upon completion of high school our students will leave us college and career ready. One of the strategies our district is implementing to achieve these goals is by assigning one to one technological devices for all students grades 3-5. Due to monetary restrictions, students in lower grades have little to no access to these devices.
Early exposure to updated resources, as well as early intervention, is key when working to close the achievement gap and create success for all students. With the access to these iPads, my students will be able to acquire skills such as typing, searching the web, and internet safety that will give them a head start when receiving their device in the third grade. Utilizing the iPads within the school day will allow students to practice literacy and math skills on school licensed sites such as kidsa-z and dreambox. Currently our class is equipped with three computers that may or may not work on any given day. In addition to the lack of resources within the classroom, Kindergarten does not receive computer time as a "special". This translates to our students not being introduced to these technology tools until the third grade.
The six iPads that are being requested will be used daily to allow a small group of children to work independently on leveled reading and math skills. Our daily schedule will allow for two 30 minute sessions, which allows each student to receive access every other day.
