In Kindergarten, we are all about having fun, learning, and working their fine motor skills. Why not combine all three together? By using locks and keys, my students will strengthen their fine motor skills by manipulating small objects. Kindergarten students unlock a new world each and every day. With the locks and keys, they will be given the opportunity to explore the different sets of locks and keys and discover they are all different sizes, shapes, and weights. While this is engaging and fun for them, they will then be able to move on to using them for academic purposes. With the different colored locks and keys, I will be able to differentiate my instruction within my classroom. Therefore, I will be able to meet all the needs of every student. We will be able to utilize the locks and keys both in reading and math centers. In the beginning, students will be able to match letters, moving on to letter sounds, then moving on to beginning sounds, sounding out CVC words, etc. Within math, students will be able to match number words to numbers, to ten frames, match number to addition or subtraction problems, etc. I believe that this will become a favorite instructional tool within my classroom that will give my students exactly what they need. They will be engaged, they will be learning, they will have invaluable fine motor practice, and they will be having fun!
